This case study will cover the custom logo design process from start to finish for one of our clients : Auto Maintenance Company. Pictured below is the logo that we designed for Auto Maintenance Company along with the process that went in to producing it.

Client Name: Auto Maintenance Company

The client offers a nationwide service that directs customers to the closest networked of mechanics for all operational repairs. They charge $40.00 per month to be responsible for all the operational repairs and maintenance for the customer’s car.
They also offer the following services.

  1. 24 Hour Roadside Assistance
  2. All repairs are documented and scanned to disk. Whenever a customer needs to know what repairs were made to there car, they send them the all repair documentation on disk at not cost.

Logo Should Incorporate

The client had a few ides of what the logo should include:
It should be an illustration, to do with Auto Maintenance, be Contemporary, casual, artsy with unlimited colours (although it must have green), the slogan needs to say “We maintain your car, so you can drive your car, without worry”.

Clients Vision

This is what the client had said:
Well, my one idea for a logo would be an animated car on a hospital bed looking kind of sick with a doctor with his stethoscope to the cars "heart" and the doctor's has a badge that says Dr. Auto M. Company.

And they are like a clinic like setting.

The slogan would be on the bottom. And I want Auto Repair Insurance on the top.

Final Selection

The Process

The first thing that happens when we receive a new business logo design order is to call the design team (our logo designers) together for a brain storming session. There are a minimum of 3 designers per project, the designers will have a meeting and each logo designer will come up with design concepts to be worked upon by the group. This is also when they may ask the client for additional information. This is the creative stage and leads to the design of unique concepts.

Initial Concepts

By day three the designers will be sending out the initial concepts of the company logo design. These designs are presented to another designer (team leader of another business logo design project) for inspection and approval. The selected logo designs are then provided to the client for viewing and they can provide any revision instructions for each of the designs.

The initial concepts sent for this logo design project:

Concept 1

Concept 2

Concept 3

Concept 4

In the email we send to the client we also explain about the colors used by our design teams as we do not use the limited colors of RGB (Red, Green, Blue) but instead the professional Pantone color scheme.

The RGB color scheme is used on TV's, computer monitors and home/office printers. The Pantone color scheme is the industry standard and all professional printers use this color scheme as it has greater variety of pre-mixed colors for a consistent corporate look.

We also direct the client to available fonts from the online library at Adobe (we stock most of the Adobe fonts). Here the client can choose a font which appeals to them.

Client's Choice

The client replied with their choice being initial concept 3 and provided the following revision instructions.

    1. The "Medicinal Drip" is in the way of the name of the company. Can you extend the name of the company out further?
    2. Can you put a water level line in the "Medical Drip" so it can look more realistic? Right now it looks like a piece of paper flapping.
    3. Can you put a nose on the car to give it a more human look?
Can you send me the logo with car color maroon?
    4. Can you send me the logo with the car color taxi cab yellow? I want the green and the car color to be the colors for my company and I don't know what looks good yet.

These instructions were then passed on to the design team who used them to create the next set of design for the client.

We aim to have revisions out to clients with in 3 business days.

Clients Second Set

Concept 3 A

Concept 3 B

Concept 3 C

Concept 3 D

When the design tem sent out the new concepts the client had this to say:

These are updates I would like to make to image

Revised Concept A

  1. I do not want any illustrations to extend into the Company name. So, I would like the "Medicine Drip" to be shorter so as not to extend into the name of my company.
  2. There is white space between the lighter green and the black border surrounding the illustration. I would for the white space to remove and have the light green color as to be consistent. Notice in Revised Concept B there is no white space.
  3. The bed has been moved out as is chopped off in Revised Concept A. I want the entire bed to be moved back as shown in Initial Concept 3
  4. The title and theme has been moved in Revised Concept A. I want verbage of the title and them to be moved back like it was in Initial Concept 3. The title and them both begin at the centre of the circle and this is what I want.
  5. I would like to see what the logo looks like (after the previous 4 requests have been made) with out the "Water Drip"

Clients 3rd Set Of Designs

After implementing the clients revision instructions (see above). The deign team sent out the following designs to the client for approval.

Concept 3.1 A

Concept 3.2 B

The client had the following to say about these designs:

Concept 3.1 A

1. Make the color of the car maroon as in Concept 3 A

2. Put the nose back on the car as in Concept 3 A

Once again the design team take the clients instructions and get to work.

Clients 4th Revised Concept

By this stage judging by the clients response and the number of revision instructions we can tell that the client will be happy to finilize with in a couple more revisions. The design team do not like to do anything that will affect the quality of the design (so they will not rush design).

Here is the design our team sent out to the client for final approval.

The clients response was “This is what I want. You have the green light.”

Final Pack

We normally get the final pack out to the client in a day or so. The final image is sent to the client in this case
The final pack sent to the client, includes the following file types and formats;
1 x High res Tif for professional printing
1 x JPG in grayscale for trademark registration purposes
3 x JPG in RGB in 3 sizes (Normal, medium and small) for home/office printing or web use
1 x  transparent PSD for professional web design use
1 x vector based .eps file (This is this fully editable master file) for professional printing and
      design work

We can also create specific file types for clients if requested and if possible.
At this stage we introduce our client to the wide variety of services available to our customers. These services include (and are not limited to) stationary design, web design, flyers, brochures, postcards and we can even design data sheets and web banners.

We create our designs using Adobe Illustrator the industry standard. If a client would like to edit the logo themselves they would require this software. We are always on hand though to make changes later if required for a small fee.
