Case Study: Big Mouth

Introduction

The client is looking to recreate an illustration designed which was lost. The Design was provided by the client. The target audience is the whole world, the design is to be placed on a website.

The design needs to be created exactly as it is shown below, including all the details and color variations.

Client Name: Big Mouth

Final Selection

The Design Process

The first thing that we do when we receive a logo order is to get all of our design team together and start discussing ideas. There are a minimum of 3 designers on each project. Some clients prefer having one designer and others believe “2 heads are better than one” but projects can have more or less designers depending on the client and their needs. The designers will come up with design concepts to be worked upon by the group. This is also the point when the designers may ask the client for additional information. This is known as the creative stage and leads to the creation of unique concepts.

Initial Concepts

By day three the designers will be sending out the initial concepts of the logo design. These designs are presented to another designer (the team leader of another business logo design project) for inspection and approval. The selected logo designs are then provided to the client for viewing and they can provide any revision instructions for each of the designs.

The initial concepts sent for this logo design project:

Initial Concept A

Initial Concept B

Initial Concept C

Initial Concept D

Initial Concept E

We send to the client with the initial concepts we also explain about the colors used by our design teams as we do not use RGB (Red, Green, Blue) color palette but instead the professional Pantone color palette.
The RGB color scheme is used on TV's, computer monitors and home/office printers. The Pantone color scheme is the industry standard and all professional printers use this color scheme as it has greater variety of pre-mixed colors for a consistent corporate look.
We also direct the client to available fonts from the online library at Adobe (we stock most of the Adobe fonts). Here the client can choose a font which appeals to them.

The client takes as long as they need to review the designs and think of any revisions they feel are necessary. When they are ready to move forward the client will provide us the instructions to carry out.

Client Response

The client replied with the comment:

The logo concept we desire to move forward with design 4 first and foremost, the rendition was superbly executed.  The following changes need to be made:

The upper lip is not the same as the submitted artwork.  A very close attempt at the upper lip on concept "Design 5" but on the link above it is not correct.  Everything else looks great. The brown color of the face is off.  The color of our choice from the pantone selection is PMS#730.  This seems like the correct color but we will not know for sure until we actually see it used on the face itself.  Other choices are PMS# 1395, 160 and 4635. If all 4 were provided, we could definitely make a choice from there.
Thanks for all your help and assistance, we look forward to the changes.

1st Set of Revisions

Once the design team have created the new concepts these are passed to the head designer for quality checks and if necessary returned to the designer to redo. The design team will not send out a design if they are not satisfied with the quality of the image.

These are the next set of concepts which were sent out to the client:

Concept D1

Concept D2

Concept D3

Concept D4

Once again the designs are passed back to our design team who implement the client’s request. The length of the design process depends entirely upon the number of revision rounds requested by the client. Each revision round can take up to 3 days for the designs to be sent back to the client.

2nd Set of Revisions

This is the design which the design team prepared for the client to view and from here the client will decide if they would like more revisions or if they would like to have the design finalized:

Design D1 is the link we are choosing to move forward with.  So far it looks great, there is only one small change that needs to be made.  the detail shading over the right half of the upper lip is too dark and gives the impression that the shading and the lip are one, making his mouth looks as if it is raised in just that right half portion of the upper lip.  If that shading on the right side only could be made lighter, that would make the distinction between the black upper lip and the shaded portion which emphasizes the expression of opening his mouth.

Once again the designs are passed back to our design team who implement the client’s request. The length of the design process depends entirely upon the number of revision rounds requested by the client. Each revision round can take up to 3 days for the designs to be sent back to the client.

3rd Set of Revisions

This is the design which the design team prepared for the client to view and from here the client will decide if they would like more revisions or if they would like to have the design finalized:

Concept D1.a

Concept D1.b

Concept D1.c

The client responded to these designs with the following comments:
Excellent job once again, we are going to go with the link below to move forward with:
  D1.a
There is one very small change that needs to be made. Although it is very small, once we start enlarging, the very small problems become larger. In the word "bigmouth" in between the top of the letter "i" and the "circle/dot" above the letter "i" is a very small  red dot. When you enlarge it, it is visible.  I do not want them to move or raise the "circle/dot" above the letter "i" just simply remove that very small red dot. This will help tremendously when enlarging is necessary.

We aim to have the revised design/s back with the client in 3 business days.

4th Set of Revisions

This is the design which the design team prepared for the client to view and from here the client will decide if they would like more revisions or if they would like to have the design finalized:

Final Selection

The client responded to these designs with the following comments:
EXCELLENT WORK!!!

Green Light!

After receiving the green light on the design, our design team begin preparing the final pack.

Final Pack

We normally get the final pack out to the client in a day or so. The final files are sent to the client as a .zip file.
The final pack sent to the client, includes the following file types and formats;

1 x High res Tif for professional printing
1 x JPG in gray scale for trademark registration purposes
3 x JPG in RGB in 3 sizes (Normal, medium and small) for home/office printing or web use
1 x  transparent PSD for professional web design use
1 x vector based .eps file (This is this fully editable master file) for professional printing and  design work

We can also create specific file types for clients if requested and if possible.

At this stage we introduce our client to the wide variety of services available to our customers. These services include (and are not limited to) stationary design, web design, flyers, brochures, postcards and we can even design data sheets and web banners.

We create our designs using Adobe Illustrator the industry standard. If a client would like to edit the logo themselves they would require this software. We are always on hand though to make changes later if required for a small fee.
