Case Study: Deja Pooch

Introduction

Déjà pooch is a new online business specializing in the pet fashion industry. It is a mid to high end pet fashion e-Commerce pet boutique site. It is not like “PetSmart” or “PetCo” Retail Company.

The target audience are people who are looking for high end pet accessories, such as pet clothing, collars/leash, special design bowls, etc. Mainly Dog lovers that tremendously pamper their beloved pets.

The logo design is to be “Hollywood’ish” high end luxury style. There is no limit on the number of colors.

Client Name: Déjà Pooch

Final Selection

The Design Process

The first thing that happens when we receive a new business logo design order is to get all our design team together for a brain storming meeting and start shooting ideas. There are a minimum of 3 designers per project. Some clients feel that having one designer is better as “Too many cooks…” and others believe “The more the merrier”, but projects can have more or less designers depending on the client. The designers will have a meeting and each logo designer will come up with design concepts to be worked upon by the group. This is also when they may ask the client for additional information. This is the creative stage and leads to the design of unique concepts.

Initial Concepts

By day three the designers will be sending out the initial concepts of the company logo design. These designs are presented to another designer (team leader of another business logo design project) for inspection and approval. The selected logo designs are then provided to the client for viewing and they can provide any revision instructions for each of the designs.

The client responded to these designs with the following comments:

Good day! I must say, your team deserves more than just a pat on the back for the work well done. Whoever worked concept 4 made us all very excited. We even went to a very nice dinner to celebrate our soon to be Company Logo.

Before we can go full force to the final stages, I would just like to see a couple of slight adjustments. The "Déjà" and the dog design are PERFECT. The placing of the words, the fonts, and the colors are also PERFECT. No need changes on those parts. I would only like to see if there's going to be any effect on the thickness of the word "Pooch" on various font sizes.

Please, if I may, I would like to see the word Pooch in:

-          1 font size higher
-          1.5 font size higher
-          2 font size higher
-          Or any slight adjustment in regard

Please do not disregard the original concept, as we may go forward with that, if we do not find any of the adjustments suitable.

Once again, thank you very much. We could not have chosen a better company as much as The Logo Company. The name itself says it all. You guys are the best.”

Once again the design is passed back to our design team who implement the client’s request. The length of the design process depends entirely upon the number of revision rounds requested by the client. Each revision round can take up to 3 days for the designs to be sent back to the client.

1st Set of Revisions

This is the design which the design team prepared for the client to view and from here the client will decide if they would like more revisions or if they would like to have the design finalized:

The client responded to these designs with the following comments:

“Good afternoon Linda,

Thank you! 4C is the one... green light it is!

Have a wonderful day.”

After receiving the green light from the client the design team would normally begin to prepare the final pack for the client but as this is a logo and Stationary project, the design team begin preparing the initial stationary concepts.

Initial Stationary Concepts

This can take up to 3 business days but the designs are generally sent out much quicker as the style, color scheme and other design elements have already been determined during the logo design process.

If the client requires the logo pack, we can send these out but for the logo ad stationary packages we send all the files out in the final pack so as to provide easy access for the client when they require them in the future.

Here are the initial stationary concepts:

Initial Stationary Concept B

Initial Stationary Concept C

Initial Stationary Concept D

As with the logo design the client takes as long as they need to review the designs and think of any revisions they feel are necessary. When they are ready to move forward the client will provide us the instructions to carry out.

The client responded with the following information:
“Good day! The stationery designs are great. Now I know I'm going to get a lot of eyes rolled on me for this, and I apologize (again) for destroying some of the concepts. I have attached 3 files for you to see. I would like to share with you my ideas of how each of them should look like.

First, I do like the fonts and their sizes. The alignment just need work, which is my fault as I have been moving them around.

Second, my attachments to you…

Business Card:
-          I would like to have the Logo slightly larger than in the original design (as shown)
-          I have also rearranged the info fields
-          The name should now be located on the top right – I couldn't find the exact font and size as the original, however, I would like it to be the same; except now it is white obviously
-          The watermark of the dog is a perfect size and tone. Please only redo as I used an eraser tool for the name.
-          Please align the left and right fields at their proper settings.

Letterhead:
-          I have taken the dog out from the right corner
-          I would like the logo on the top slightly smaller, perhaps a 10-15% decrease
-          Here's the tricky part: the watermark dog should be placed just at the bottom right without passing the footer. The size should be about the height of a quarter-page minus that of the height of the footer. Again, I can see what it looks like in my Photoshop, but it's not showing in the attachment I know. And, yes I did save it.

Envelope:
-          Logo size is perfect; I've only added a name and moved the address below it. Please align accordingly. Also, the name is bold, the rest normal. I hope these are editable.
-          I've also added the site name as you can see from the attachment.
-          Again, there is supposed to be a watermark of a dog at the bottom right corner. The size of the dog should be half of the envelope's height. I hope that makes sense. I don't know why it is not showing. Please align the dog in the same margin as the rectangular block on the left. Also, the tone should be the same as the business card.

I look forward to your response.”

The client’s comments are passed on to the design team and they begin implementing the client’s instructions.
We aim to have the revised design/s back with the client in 3 business days.

1st Stationary Design Revisions

This is the design which the design team prepared for the client to view and from here the client will decide if they would like more revisions or if they would like to have the design finalized:

Concept A1

The client responded with the following information:

“I can't express enough how much work you have all done for us. On behalf of Déjà Pooch, thank you very much for your great care and utmost service.”

Final Pack

We normally get the final pack out to the client in a day or so. The final files are sent to the client as a .zip file.

The final pack sent to the client, includes the following file types and formats;

1 x High res Tif for professional printing
1 x JPG in gray scale for trademark registration purposes
3 x JPG in RGB in 3 sizes (Normal, medium and small) for home/office printing or web use
1 x  transparent PSD for professional web design use
1 x vector based .eps file (This is this fully editable master file) for professional printing and  design work
The letterhead is provided in JPG (RGB Color for home/office printing) and AI (CMYK Color for professional printing).
The Business Card is provided in JPG (RGB Color-home/office printing) and AI (CMYK Color-professional printing)
The Envelope is provided in Size 10 as a JPG (RGB Color-home/office printing) and AI (CMYK Color-professional printing)

We can also create specific file types for clients if requested and if possible.

At this stage we introduce our client to the wide variety of services available to our customers. These services include (and are not limited to) stationary design, web design, flyers, brochures, postcards and we can even design data sheets and web banners.

We create our designs using Adobe Illustrator the industry standard. If a client would like to edit the logo themselves they would require this software. We are always on hand though to make changes later if required for a small fee.
