Case Study - LionStar Engineering

Client Profile

LionStar Engineering is a newly established software design company that design and distribute engineering software for the structural engineering/civil engineering industry. The clients products/software will be sold online. The client has always strived personally and professionally for integrity, honesty, quality, curiosity and commitment.

The name Lionstar comes from the Bible, where the three kings follow a rising star to Jesus’ birth. It is suggested that the star of Bethlehem was actually the planet Jupiter in the constellation of “Leo,” which led them to the new King - thus the name LionStar.

The target audience will be structural engineers in the civil engineering profession.

The logo should be professional in nature. The client specified but did not limit us to the following colors: Blue (always looks professional), green and yellow.

Client Name: LionStar Engineering

Final Selection

The Design Process:

The first thing that happens when we receive a new business logo design order is to get all our design team together for a brain storming meeting and start shooting ideas. There are a minimum of 3 designers per project. Some clients feel that having one designer is better as “Too many cooks….” and others believe “The more the merrier”, but projects can have more or less designers depending on the client. The designers will have a meeting and each logo designer will come up with design concepts to be worked upon by the group. This is also when they may ask the client for additional information. This is the creative stage and leads to the design of unique concepts.

Initial Concepts:

By day three the designers will be sending out the initial concepts of the company logo design. These designs are presented to another designer (team leader of another business logo design project) for inspection and approval. The selected logo designs are then provided to the client for viewing and they can provide any revision instructions for each of the designs.

The initial concepts sent for this logo design project:

Initial Concept A

Initial Concept B

Initial Concept C

Initial Concept D

Initial Concept E

Initial Concept F

Initial Concept G

Initial Concept H

In the email we send to the client with the initial concepts we also explain about the colors used by our design teams as we do not use RGB (Red, Green, Blue) color palette but instead the professional Pantone color palette.
The RGB color scheme is used on TV's, computer monitors and home/office printers. The Pantone color scheme is the industry standard and all professional printers use this color scheme as it has greater variety of pre-mixed colors for a consistent corporate look.

We also direct the client to available Fonts from the online library at Adobe (we stock most of the Adobe fonts). Here the client can choose a font which appeals to them.

Clients Response:

The client takes as long as they need to review the designs and think of any revisions they feel are necessary. When they are ready to move forward the client will provide us the instructions to carry out.

The client replied with the comment:

Wow!  I am blown away with all these great concepts!  I was expecting three and you guys shot out eight!

Nice work - You really tackled all of my ideas for the concept and even surprised me with such an outstanding product - the logo looks professional, creative and suggests noble character.

Let's move forward with this one:

Initial Concept D

The only suggestions I have are related to the font:

  1. For the "LionStar" text, I'd like to use the "Franklin Gothic Std No. 2 Roman" (I found it in the Adobe site you reference)
  2. Is it possible to keep the dot over the "i" in LionStar as a 45 degree rotated square as in the current concept?
  3. I think the relative size, boldness and placement of the text "ENGINEERING" is perfect with respect to the company name.  However, considering the font from No. 1, I think we should use "ITC Franklin Gothic Std medium" for this text

I also have a question:
In addition to the services I have already ordered, can I also get a modified version of the logo as the current Lion head by itself (no
title), and my website "www.LionStarEng.com" in an arc below?  What would be the cost for this addition of services?  I would NOT need this in a business card or letterhead, just the picture by itself.  I was thinking of having some watches made as a promo.

The client decided to discard the other 7 designs and move ahead with a single design.
The client’s comments are passed on to the design team and they begin implementing the client’s instructions.

We aim to have the revised design/s back with the client in 3 business days.

The client also asked about an extra version of the logo design (just the lion). We provide a single logo design as part of the original price. Any extra versions incur a design fee (depending upon the work required).

Clients 1st Revisions:

Once the design team have created the new concepts these are passed to the head designer for quality checks and if necessary returned to the designer to redo. The design team will not send out a design if they are not satisfied with the quality of the image.

These are the next set of concepts which were sent out to the client:

Concept D1

Concept D2

The client can take as long as need to consider each of the designs and provide feedback. We have hints on how to provide Feedback and instructions.

Clients Response to 1st Revisions:

The client provided the following feedback:

Thanks for the quote on the extra version, it sounds reasonable.

Regarding image:

Concept D1

I am a little confused on the fonts in the latest revision, which seem to look different from the Adobe website.

Here are the adobe font(s) from the website:

Franklin Gothic Std No.2 Roman:
http://store.adobe.com/type/browser/F/FRAQ/F_FRAQ-10005000.html

ITC Franklin Gothic Std Medium:
http://store.adobe.com/type/browser/F/FKGQ/F_FKGQ-10006000.html

I am not sure if I was not clear in my suggestions in the last email or perhaps the adobe fonts have changed.

Once again the designs are passed back to our design team who implement the client’s request. The length of the design process depends entirely upon the number of revision rounds requested by the client. Each revision round can take up to 3 days for the designs to be sent back to the client.

2nd Set of Revisions:

This is the design which the design team prepared for the client to view and from here the client will decide if they would like more revisions or if they would like to have the design finalized:

Concept D1A

Clients Response to 2nd Revisions:

The client responded to these designs with the following comment:

With reference to the latest graphic:

Concept D1A

That is exactly what I was looking for! Please let your design team
know they have done a great job!  I am really excited about this logo and your work will mean a great deal to me and my family.  Please move forward with the business card & stationary design, you have my "green light".

Also, if you are still able to do the extra version of the logo (stand alone logo with web address), I would like to make one change to the extra version based on the final version of the primary logo you showed me today.

Concept D2

The client’s comments are passed on to the design team and they begin implementing the client’s instructions. They decided to keep Concept D1a as the main logo design but also to continue with the extra logo design Concept D2.

Extra Logo Design Revisions:

This is the design which the design team prepared for the client to view and from here the client will decide if they would like more revisions.

Concept D2A

Clients Comments:

I think my suggestion may not have been interpreted the way I intended. I actually like the size of the fonts from the first concept relative to each other, but wanted all the fonts scaled together so that the width of "LionStar" and line would be about the same width as the logo. I had copied the logo into word and roughly scaled the fonts together for the visual appearance I was looking for.  Please use the design you provided: Concept D2a but please scale the fonts together as I discussed.

Once again the designs are passed back to our design team who implement the client’s request. The length of the design process depends entirely upon the number of revision rounds requested by the client.

The client responded to these designs with the following comment:

This looks great please use Concept D2a-1
Thanks,

Concept D2A-1

After receiving the green light from the client the design team would normally begin to prepare the final pack for the client but as this is a logo and Stationary project, the design team begin preparing the initial stationary concepts

Initial Stationary Concepts

This can take up to 3 business days but the designs are generally sent out much quicker as the style, color scheme and other design elements have already been determined during the logo design process.
If the client requires the logo pack, we can send these out but for the logo ad stationary packages we send all the files out in the final pack so as to provide easy
access for the client when they require them in the future.

Here are the initial stationary concepts:

Initial Stationary Concept A

Initial Stationary Concept B

Initial Stationary Concept C

As with the logo design the client takes as long as they need to review the designs and think of any revisions they feel are necessary. When they are ready to move forward the client will provide us the instructions to carry out.

The client responded with the following instructions:

Lets move forward using the following letterhead/business card design: Initial Stationary Concept C

I have the following requests for the design:

  1. please remove the blue horizontal bars from letterhead, business card and envelope
  2. on letterhead and business card, for email and website please use case as follows: Email address or www.LionStarEng.com, where it occurs
  3. Letterhead: centre logo at top of page
  4. Letterhead: at the bottom of the page, please put the website address centred over a blue line.  The website should be larger and bold, like the boldness of "engineering" in "LionStar Engineering" or larger, as seems appropriate.  The blue line should extend from margin to margin.  Under the blue line, put the P.O. Box address on one line with the phone and email.  The address, phone and email should be separated by blue diamonds (like from logo) instead of phone and email icons.
  5. Business Card: please use blue diamonds from logo instead of phone and email icons
  6. Business Card: please put logo at top left hand side.  You may need to shift watermark down and slightly to the right, whatever looks best.
  7. Business Card: align all contact information (except website) to the right of the card.  Leave the website at the left under watermark, with a larger and bold font like my name but in blue.  Please remove the web icon.  Contact information at right of card should be as follows from top down:

    Chad W. Harden, P.E.
    President

    P.O. Box xxxxx
    xxxxxx, xx xxxxx-xxxx
    phone....
    email....

  8. Business Card: please remove the cell phone number
  9. Business Card: add title of "President" underneath "Chad W. Harden,  P.E." In your experience, would a title under a name be in smaller blue font like address or bolder?
  10. Envelope: Place address at top right-hand corner
  11. In general, any other modifications to facilitate these changes I will leave to your discretion

As always, if there are any directions which are unclear or need some
clarification, please feel free to call. This may be the best way to communicate an idea before the design is complete.
    Looking good,

**The clients contact details and other sensitive data has been replaced for safety and security reasons**
