Client Profile
The client is a student run organization that works to bring out innovative ideas from the labs at MIT. They promote creative thinking, entrepreneurial action and sharing of knowledge.
The clients target audience is a blend of MIT Students, prospective students and corporate sponsors (think Dell, Motorola, RIM, Ideo, Nokia - typically technology focused innovative companies).
Client Name: MIT Innovation Club
Final Selection
Logo to include
The Logo design will include the name “MIT Innovation Club”. The number of colors was defined by the client and these were specified by the existing website.
The client already had a slogan: “Where Innovation Begins” and this was to be used in conjunction with the logo.
The client also provided links to the existing MIT site for reference.
The Design Process
The first thing that happens when we receive a new business logo design order is to get all our design team together for a brain storming meeting and start shooting ideas. There are a minimum of 3 designers per project. The designers will have a meeting and each logo designer will come up with design concepts to be worked upon by the group. This is also when they may ask the client for additional information. This is the creative stage and leads to the design of unique concepts.
Initial Concepts
By day three the designers will be sending out the initial concepts of the company logo design. These designs are presented to another designer (team leader of another business logo design project) for inspection and approval. The selected logo designs are then provided to the client for viewing. They can then provide any revisions, as required by the client, to the selected design.
The initial concepts sent for this logo design project:
Concept A |
Concept B |
Concept C |
Concept D |
Concept E |
Concept F |
In the email we send to the client we also explain about the colors used by our design teams as we do not use the limited screen colors of RGB (Red, Green, Blue) but instead the professional Pantone matching system.
The RGB color scheme is used on TV's, computer monitors and some home/office printers. The Pantone color scheme is the industry standard and all professional printers can use this color scheme as it has greater variety of pre-mixed colors for a consistent corporate look.
We also direct the client to available fonts from the online library at Adobe (we stock most of the Adobe fonts). Here the client can choose a font which appeals to them.
Clients Response
Thanks for your quick turnaround and I apologize for our delay in response. We've been deliberating on the various logos and have some feedback as well as a decision with regard to the base format that
we'd like to use:

Concept B
This concept should serve as the base, but we would prefer to see something that
incorporates the actual MIT logo as attached. We would also like to
see a version using the hues of blue as in our existing website http://web.mit.edu/innovation/
Font choices look pretty good for the most part, though I wouldn't
mind seeing an option that "feels" a little more web2.0-ish (made up
adjectives are ok, right?). Also, the tagline should probably be
somewhat larger for legibility sake. Looking good so far, Thanks!
These instructions were then passed on to the design team who use them to create the next set of design for the client. We aim to have revisions out to clients with in 3 business days.
Clients 2nd Revision
Once the design team have created the new concepts these are passed to the head designer for quality checks and if necessary returned to the designer to redo. The design team will not send out a design if they are not satisfied with the quality of the image.
These are the next set of concepts which were sent out to the client:
Concept B-1
|
Concept B-2
|
Concept B-3
|
The client can take their time to consider each of the designs and provide feedback.
We have some detailed hints on how to provide feedback and instructions to us.
Client Response
Look’s good so far. For the main logo can we have the color scheme from:
Concept B-1
|
but with the tagline sized like in:
Concept B-3
|
We'll need versions with and without the tagline. Also,
can we have a black and white version as well as a reverse version in
white that we can use for things with dark colored background (like
on polo shirts)? Versions with and without the tagline for these as
well, please.
3rd Set Of Revisions
Again the design team get back to work and implement the clients requests. Here are the designs we sent to the client:
Concept B-3a
|
Concept B-3b
|
Concept B-3c
|
Concept B-3d
|
Concept B-3e
|
Clients Response
These are great. All we need now are the vector format files, and web-ready versions with transparency. If we only get one, then it would have to be the first one:
Concept B-3a |
But in reality, we need all of them in an .ai or vector format.
The logo design package covers the cost of a design and we provide the client with all the final files for this design. If a client requires extra versions of a design these can be arranged and they do not normally cost the full logo design price.
This client requested all the files for all five designs, which they purchased.
Final Pack
We normally get the final pack out to the client in a day or so. The final image is sent to the client in this case
The final pack sent to the client, includes the following file types and formats;
1 x High res Tif for professional printing
1 x JPG in grayscale for trademark registration purposes
3 x JPG in RGB in 3 sizes (Normal, medium and small) for home/office printing or web use
1 x transparent PSD for professional web design use
1 x vector based .eps file (This is this fully editable master file) for professional printing and design work.
We can also create specific file types for clients if requested and if possible.
At this stage we introduce our client to the wide variety of services available to our customers. These services include (and are not limited to) stationary design, web design, flyers, brochures, postcards and we can even design data sheets and web banners.
We create our designs using Adobe Illustrator the industry standard. If a client would like to edit the logo themselves they would require this software. We are always on hand though to make changes later if required for a small fee.
