Case Study: More Unique Designs

Introduction

More Unique Designs is a new interior design firm. Their available service include: consultations, programming, space planning, design analysis, drawings, the specifications of fixtures and their location, furnishings, reflected ceiling plans, fabrication of non-load-bearing elements of interior spaces of buildings, and construction administration.

The target audience is homeowners interested in customizing their interiors to address their lifestyle preferences.

The logo design is to be text based and must include the company colors (Black, Gold and Burgundy). The logo design needs to convey the company attributes: customer focus, process oriented, quality driven, analytical, non-conventional thinking, creative, cautious, trustworthy, can-do attitude, and friendly.

Final Selection

The Design Process

The first to happen when we receive a new logo order is we get all of our design team together for a brain storming session to discuss ideas. Once a team of designers for the project has been assigned, the designers begin creating their concepts. This is also the point when the designers may ask the client for additional information, which can be an image or even a sketch or doodle. This is the creative stage and leads to the creation of unique concepts.

Initial Concepts

By day three the designers will be sending out the initial concepts of the logo design. These designs are presented to another designer (the team leader of another business logo design project) for inspection and approval. The selected logo designs are then provided to the client for viewing and they can provide any revision instructions for each of the designs.

The initial concepts sent for this logo design project:

Initial Concept A

Initial Concept B

Initial Concept C

Initial Concept D

Initial Concept E

Initial Concept F

We send the following information to the client with the initial concepts:

An explanation of the colors used in the designs. As we do not use the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) color palette but instead the professional Pantone color palette.
The RGB color scheme is used on TV's, computer monitors and home/office printers. The Pantone color scheme is the industry standard and all professional printers use this color scheme as it has greater variety of pre-mixed colors for a consistent corporate look.

We also direct the client to available Fonts from the online library at Adobe (we stock most of the Adobe fonts). Here the client can choose a font which appeals to them.

The client takes as long as they need to review the designs and think of any revisions they feel are necessary. When they are ready to move forward the client will provide us the instructions to carry out.

Client Response

The client replied with the comment:

“Thanks for the logo designs.  I would like to combine the concepts from the following logos:

Design D and Design E

Attached are logos from your site that has the look/feel that I would like for my logo design.  (i.e., unique letter/symbol, accent color, and mixed font).

Please incorporate the following slogan/tagline in my logo:

"Design Made Easy"

Please use the following Pantone colors:

412 (Black) ,485 (Red/Burgundy), and 3955 (gold)”

The client decided to discard the other 4 designs and move ahead with a combination of 2 design. The client’s comments are passed on to the design team and they begin implementing the client’s instructions.

We aim to have the revised design/s back with the client in 3 business days.

1st Set of Revisions

This is the design which the design team prepared for the client to view and from here the client will decide if they would like more revisions or if they would like to have the design finalized:

Concept G1

Concept G2

Concept G3

The client responded to these designs with the following comments:
I would like to make revisions to the following logo concept:

Design G2

-Please add shadowing to the lettering following the "U" in "Unique
-Please change "Desigs" to "Designs"
-Please change tagline to "Interior Design Made Easy"
-Please change tagline color to a gray scale

In additions to the above changes to the original design, I would like to see the original design modified in the following ways:

(Version 1) Provide alternative abstract art over the "or" in "More" (make slightly curvilinear)
(Version 2) Move  "More" vertically upward slightly above "Unique Designs"
(Version 3) Move "More" over "Unique" with the "o" in "More" over the "i" in Unique and make "U" in "Unique" more designer”

The client decided to discard the other 5 designs and move ahead with a single design.
The client’s comments are passed on to the design team and they begin implementing the client’s instructions.

We aim to have the revised design/s back with the client in 3 business days.

2nd Set of Revisions

Once the design team have created the new concepts these are passed to the head designer for quality checks and if necessary returned to the designer to redo. The design team will not send out a design if they are not satisfied with the quality of the image.

These are the next set of concepts which were sent out to the client:

Concept G2.a

Concept G2.b

Concept G2.c

Concept G2.d

The client replied with the comment:

“Is it possible to see the following changes today?  And, when do you provide the business card and stationary designs?

I am partial to the following revision:

Design g2c

Please make the following changes:

-Make 'U' in 'Unique" cleaner (i.e., remove vertical line extension from the start of the 'u' and remove the horizontal line from the opening of the 'u')

-Make 'U' in "Unique" more distinguishable yet still overlapping with "More" (i.e., move slightly to the right and/or thicken)

-Remove vertical lines from the bottom of block with "More"

Once again the designs are passed back to our design team who implement the client’s request. The length of the design process depends entirely upon the number of revision rounds requested by the client. Each revision round can take up to 3 days for the designs to be sent back to the client.

3rd Set of Revisions

This is the design which the design team prepared for the client to view and from here the client will decide if they would like more revisions or if they would like to have the design finalized.

Concept G2.c1

The client responded to these designs with the following comment:

“I am happy with the design, please move forward in the design process.”

After receiving the green light from the client the design team would normally begin to prepare the final pack for the client but as this is a logo and Stationary project, the design team begin preparing the initial stationary concepts.

Initial Stationary Concepts

This can take up to 3 business days but the designs are generally sent out much quicker as the style, color scheme and other design elements have already been determined during the logo design process.

If the client requires the logo pack, we can send these out but for the logo ad stationary packages we send all the files out in the final pack so as to provide easy access for the client when they require them in the future.

Here are the initial stationary concepts:

Initial Stationary Concept A

Initial Stationary Concept B

Initial Stationary Concept C

Initial Stationary Concept D

As with the logo design the client takes as long as they need to review the designs and think of any revisions they feel are necessary. When they are ready to move forward the client will provide us the instructions to carry out.

The client responded with the following information:
I would like to see changes to the following stationary design.

Design c

Modifications are shown in the file titled modifications.tif.  Please make watermark the size used in Design d.

Also add website (www.moreuniquedesigns.com) to stationary.”

The client’s comments are passed on to the design team and they begin implementing the client’s instructions.
