This case study will cover the custom logo design process from start to finish for one of our clients : rjdc.com
Pictured below is the logo that we designed for rjdc.com along with the process that went in to producing it.

Client Name: Rjdc.com |

Clients Design Brief:
Rjdc.com is a website services firm. They provide site design, hosting, domain names, etc.
The Logo Design Process:
The design process begins with our client filling out our intuitive online order form. This contains a series of questions aimed at giving our logo designers as much information as possible so that we can provide the best logo design service to our client. The questions range from the client’s desired use of their company logo design, the required style of their logo, the amount of colors to be used and more. There are helpful hints and tips for nearly all the questions on the order form so it is a breeze to complete.
At this point, it is down to the client just how much artistic direction they provide to us. Some clients like to leave a lot of the creativity to us, others like to give us specific details and pointers as to how they would like their company logo design process to proceed.
In the case of rjdc.com here are some of the details provided:
Target Audience: Briefly? One word. Everyone
- Logo Should Include: emblem-iconic design style
- Exact name, text, or abbreviation to be on the logo: Rjdc.com
- Company Colors: Oranges, Reds, Yellows, Black. Would prefer to move away from any 'blues'.
- Font Requirements: Would prefer bold text for company name
Once they have filled out the order form we pass the client’s design brief to our company logo design team. Here is rjdc.com’s creative strategy:
Hello,
Please see www.rjdc.com for a small sample of the current logo. It may have a little heavy "Star Trek" look to it. That was not the intent. I would prefer to get away from that. You'll also notice that I use just text and then a small graphic. I am in the process of designing a new site but would like to start with a logo first so the current site will change with the logo. I'll admit it. I can design websites but I can not design a good logo. Sometimes it sheds a new creative light on things when another someone has some new and fresh ideas. The site slogan is an option. I'm not sure I want to see it in there or not. It just depends. I sort of like Rockets but I am open to most other ideas EXCEPT I do not want any 'swooshes, globes, computers, or mouse's' used in the design. =) I am very curious as to what you guys can come up with. Good luck. You'll need it. ;) |
Initial Design Concepts:
Once the designers have been provided with all the details they form a team and begin to formulate ideas for company logos based on the information provided.
Once they have put a lot of ideas together the lead logo designer chooses the best ideas and puts the designers with the best designs on the project. There can be as many as five different designers on each project and always more than one. This leads to maximum creativity and choice.
Thus begins the custom logo process.
We will provide a minimum of three custom logos but usually the count is closer to 4 or 5 and in this case our chosen logo designers field five initial concepts.
Once the lead designer has checked over the design concepts we email them out to the client for review.
At this stage we are looking to be getting fairly close to what the client has in mind for their company logo design (based on what they told us on the order form) and will be waiting for them to reply with their selection to move forward with.
|
Client Feedback:
Once the client has seen the initial concepts that have been sent out, the next step in the procedure is to await their selection and re-work the designs accordingly. In this case the client comes back to us letting us know that they have been unable to make a selection. It happens from time to time so the feedback we get from the client is really important for the next stage. Even if that feedback is negative:
Hello,
Thank you for the samples. I am afraid that I can't say that I particularly like any of them. They are good but they are just not really standing out for me. Can I switch to another style?
I've attached an older scheme that I liked in the past but could never get finished. You can see which one I have been using by going to http://rjdc.co.uk/
I have some suggestions that I've just come up with. Let's try a rocket design.
How about something with a rocket lined up on the upright part of an R.
I kind of like the idea of incorporating an American flag into the design as well.
Along with these comments, the client provides links to a few websites that he has seen and admires the graphics on. This can be useful to gauge more the style that the client has in his minds eye.
Armed with this new information our design team steps into rework mode and begins re-working new concepts for the client. Our policy of offering unlimited free revisions means that the client will not have to pay for the new concepts – unlike some of our competitors who would have charged for the re-workings. We firmly believe that if we are going to provide an affordable logo design package, flexibility is going to be key, the design process is 2-way, and we have to be able to provide designs that reflect the client’s needs and creative ideas. We don't expect you to pay a dime more than the original price you pay.
|
|
Design Revision:
Once the client has responded with the design(s) that they like the look of along with any revisions that they would like to be made, the designs are passed back to our designers along with the clients comments.
This is what they thought of the re-worked designs:
Hello,
I've taken two of my favorites and listed what I liked about them below. It's a mix-match of the two I like. Maybe you all can come up with something
I like this one the best.
I believe it's the rocket coming out of the "R" like it is. I almost would prefer a reflective silver / steel look for the R. Can the rocket somehow loop around the R without losing the effectiveness of either? I would also like to see if it can somehow square up or rectangle a bit. The round flag didn't really do much for me. |
 |

|
I kind of like this one too. It's the square-ness to it that I like. I would prefer the "R" to not be on any background. Maybe a more natural 'R'? Add little more co lour to it. Some orange to the flame trail similar to the above logo example. Can the stars and bars be turned or somehow be given a slight wave? I'm not sure I like the red and white bars straight across. Any other ideas for that? |
I have no example of any fonts I prefer though. :( I looked on Adobe but nothing really jumped out at me. These are a few I sort of liked. http://store.adobe.com/type/browser/P/P_1415.html
http://store.adobe.com/type/browser/P/P_1272.html (This one the 'period or dot' is square. I need the dot in .com to be round.) http://store.adobe.com/type/browser/P/P_1487.html
Overall I really like the ideas behind all of them. Whoever is working these are really gifted in the art and I want to say "Thank you!" to all. Regards, Rj |
Back To The Designers:
The comments and revision instructions provided by the client are invaluable to the custom logo design process and with this set of revisions the client has really given our designers some good pointers to work from. This isn’t however indicative of how the process flows every time, some times our designers are left to just basic instructions along the lines of :
“I don’t really like that color scheme” or “It looks too cartoony”
“Try calming it down a bit, it looks very busy”
No matter how much or little direction our logo design team are given they can move forward with ease and provide worthwhile ‘ Business Logo ’ quality designs for our corporate logo customers as shown with the next set of revisions fielded by our logo designers:
This next selection fielded by our design team has incorporated components from both of the client’s preferred designs from the previous round. You don’t have to stick with one just one design and only move forward with that. Our graphic design process has a lot of room to move about in and with our unlimited revisions you can feel free to experiment and mix and match your designs until you are totally satisfied with the final product. We will of course help you get there but you are free to experiment. |
Final Selection:
At this stage we often have a design that is just right for our client, if not the revision process repeats until we get a design that’s just right – remember, it’s unlimited free revisions or your money back –ALL of it.
In this particular case our client is ready to finalize their design and has chosen their favorite logo.

We pass this selection back to our design team and they begin creating the final high quality file types. Up until this point, the images are created in a .JPEG format, and while good enough for viewing on your PC during the design process they will not do for commercial printing. That's why we provide all the different file formats that you can see on our file formats page
Our design team use the industry standard design software called Adobe Illustrator. This not only allows them complete creative control over the designs but also gives them the ability to produce a multitude of high quality file formats for our clients . We can provide a file for pretty much every conceivable use of the new logo design. If the client requires any specific file types that we do not provide as standard, all they have to do is ask. We have the technology to cater to even the most demanding clients’ needs and will produce unusual file formats for specialist applications if at all possible. Just ask! |
 |
They can now use their logo for:
Business card design / printing
Stationery design / printing
Website design /
Brochure design
/ Postcard design
/ Printing on to jackets - T-shirts – baseball caps
Storefront signs and pretty much anywhere they want the logo to go!

Other Information:
Once ready, we store the client’s final pack on our server and send them a link via email from which they can download their files. For ease of use we provide all the files together in a ZIP archive. The client is then free to copy this to CD for safe keeping.
This archive will continue to be stored on our server to provide easy access to the project for changes to the design, upgrades to the design package (further stationery design including letterheads, business cards, compliment slips, envelopes) – all of which can easily have the logo design incorporated to provide a cohesive and professional corporate look to your company.
By storing your designs on our server, not only do we have quick access for changes but this allows easy access to our printing services offered by our sister company:
www.printbonus.com (exclusive low cost, corporate grade, professional printer to The Logo Company)
Your files are also protected against accidental deletion, system crashes/failures and theft of your computer hardware – all of this for no extra cost to you. We hold your files for a minimum of 1 year after we have delivered them to you.
Not only are your final designs stored, but so is every concept that was created during the entire process. 6 months down the line, should you decide that you would like to use one of the other concepts as well, for a small additional fee we can provide you quick access to your files and our design team. You can have another set of final ‘ready to use’ files in a matter of days.
All of this put together means you can have professional designer quality logos at affordable logo design prices, with great quality printing and customer support, safe in the knowledge that your designs are safe to stand the test of time. You’ll never have to go to anybody else ever again for any of your future design and printing needs.
