DPI stands for Dots Per Inch. Places who do printing (such as for business cards or letterhead) need a 300 DPI image to print a quality image.
The logo you receive from the logo company will contain a standard image for the web, as well as a HUUUUGGGGEEE image that is 300 DPI. It will really look like it is a couple of inches wide/tall just because of the resolution.
