It was named in honour of England's King George II. During the Civil War the fall of Atlanta was a crucial turning point in the defeat of the South. Today, Atlanta, which became Georgia's capital in 1868 is a thriving city with major national corporations and it is considered the economic and cultural centre of the Southeast. Georgia leads the nation in the production of paper, board, tufted textile products and processed chicken. Other major manufactured products are transportation equipment, food products, apparel, and chemicals. He was one of the main leaders of the American civil rights movement. King's most influential and well-known public address is the "I Have A Dream" speech delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. in 1963. In 1964 King became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work as a peacemaker, promoting non-violence and equal treatment for different races. STONE MOUNTAIN Stone Mountain is a granite dome located in a suburb of Atlanta. At its summit the elevation is 1,683 feet (513 m) and 825 feet (251.5 m) above the surrounding plateau. Stone Mountain is one of the largest single masses of exposed granite in the world. The three men on the carving on the mountain are three Confederate heroes of the Civil War: Confederate President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee and Lt. General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. STEAMSHIP SAVANNAH In 1819 Savannah became the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The ship which measured 33 m (109 ft) made the crossing from Savannah, Georgia, to Liverpool, England, in 21 days. Records show that the ship was under steam power for only eight hours of the trip.
