ROBERT WADLOW Robert Pershing Wadlow was born in Alton, Illinois in 1918 to less-than-average height parents as a normal-size baby. He developed a pituitary gland problem and by age 13 he was already 7ft 4in. He eventually grew to be 8ft 11.1in. when he passed away in 1940. It took 12 men to carry him to his final resting place at Upper Alton Cemetery moments away from a life size bronze statue that was erected in his honour. Although born in Kentucky he made a new start in Indiana after losing all his property in court cases. After more of the same problems there his family settled on public land in Illinois. Lincoln was elected president on November 6, 1860 largely due to his stance on slavery. It was only then at the age of 51 did he grow a beard at the suggestion by an 11 year old Grace Bedell who wrote to him suggesting, “Let your whiskers grow, you would look a great deal better for your face is so thin” He remained president up until his assassination on April 14th, 1865. He was the first president to die in office. COMMERCE Illinois has a booming agriculture industry. The sprawling Chicago District is a great iron and steel producer and home to Americas 28th largest company, Boeing Co. Boeing is the worlds leading manufacturer of commercial airplanes. It also manufactures satellites. Boeing is most famous for producing the Boeing 747, also known as the “Jumbo jet” and is one of the most recognizable planes in history. To accommodate the manufacture, Boeing built the largest building by volume ever made. The worst air disaster in history occurred when two Boeing 747s crashed into each other in Tenerife in 1977 killing a total of 583 people. The crash was a result of numerous events including a redirecting of 4 planes, a bomb in the airport, heavy fog, a plane taking off without clearance and 2 people speaking on the radio simultaneously. If any one of these events did not occur the Boeing 747s would not have collided.
