INTRODUCTION

Massachusetts is the most populous of the six New England states and ranks 3rd in population density. Most of the residents live in the Boston area and it is named after the indigenous population, the Massachusett.

BOSTON COMMON

Boston Common became the first public park in America in 1634. It is 50 acres in size and has a visitors’ centre at the Tremont Street side. It has been the site of many protests over the years including the Vietnam War in 1969 when 100,000 turned out. Martin Luther King Jr., Pope John Paul II and Judy Garland have all entertained similar sized crowds in the common. In 2006 it became the site of a new world record when 30,128 lanterns were lit simultaneously.

MIT BLACKJACK TEAM

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology was where the MIT Blackjack team began. All 6 were engineering students there and in the 90’s they won millions against various Las Vegas casinos. They were eventually caught after security at one of the casinos came across the Massachusetts Year Book and made the connection between the 6 twenty-something students who seemed to win big every weekend.

The 6 students from MIT were the last and greatest of all the card counters. They worked in teams, exploited inexperienced dealers, poor shuffling or lax security. They recorded every session exactly and practiced relentlessly.

BASKETBALL

Dr. James Naismith invented basketball in 1891 at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. Given the freezing Massachusetts winters, Naismith wanted to invent an indoor recreational activity that did not exclusively rely on strength.

The first game used 2 peach baskets and a soccer ball. There was no dribbling because the soccer ball did not have good elasticity and was too light. The game relied on bounce passes, not unlike the game of netball today. The famous orange ball was invented years later and dribbling was introduced.

Incidentally, volleyball was invented 4 years later, also in Massachusetts.

FRANKLIN

In the late 18th Century part of Wrentham, Massachusetts split from the main town. The new town had no bell, nor means to buy one for the church so they renamed their town Franklin and requested Benjamin Franklin to donate them a bell for their church.
Benjamin Franklin sent them a crate of books with a note that read, “Sense being preferable to sound” and suggested they start a library.

The library is the oldest public library in the United States and is still in operation today.

HARVARD UNIVERSITY

Harvard University was the country’s first college and was founded in 1636. It now has over 18,000 degree students and a further 13,000 enrolled in one or more courses. There are over 14,000 people who work at Harvard.

It boasts one of the most impressive Alumni including 7 presidents and more than 40 Nobel laureates. It boasts the second largest library in the country.
