INTRODUCTION

New York, also known as ‘The Big Apple’ came under the English rule in 1664. New York is known for its history as a gateway for immigration into the United States. It is also known for its status as a transporter and manufacturing center. The major manufacturing industries are printing, publishing, industrial machinery and electronic equipment. New York City is famous for it skyscrapers, museums, theatres, and parks.

STATUE OF LIBERTY

In 1886 France gave the Statue of Liberty to the people of the United States in recognition of the friendship established during the American Revolution. The statue stands on Liberty Island in the mouth of the Hudson River. The Statue of Liberty has grown to become a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. Worldwide the Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable icons of the USA. The statue of liberty has been featured on numerous stamps, coins, medals, and medallions.

WALL STREET

Wall Street is a narrow street in lower Manhattan, New York City. It is the original home of the New York Stock Exchange. The street is the historic headquarters of the largest U.S. brokerages and investment banks. Wall Street was named after the wooden wall built by Dutch colonists in 1653 to defend themselves from the British and Native Americans. ARTHUR ELDRED – EAGLE SCOUT

Arthur Eldred became the first Eagle Scout in May 1912. Eldred was born in Brooklyn and raised in Oceanside, Long Island by his mother. He was an American agricultural official and executive. As a teenager he became the first Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). This was only two years after the BSA was founded in 1910. The Eagle Scouts is commonly recognised with its logo of an eagle. This is mainly seen on medals, badges, palms and knots.

NEW YORK POST

The “New York Post” founded in 1801 by Alexander Hamilton is the oldest running newspaper in the United States. The paper is famous for its sports sections and its well known gossip page. The New York Post describes itself as the nation's oldest continuously published daily newspaper.

LICENSE PLATES

New York was the first state to require license plates for cars. Until plates became Government Issue motorists were simply obliged to make their own. The earliest plates were made out of porcelain baked onto iron or simple ceramic with no backing. This made them extremely fragile and impractical.
