INTRODUCTION
Virginia was founded in 1607 in Jamestown. It was the first permanent English settlement in North America. In 1619 slavery was introduced there. Virginia was named after Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen of England. Virginia holds an important place in American history as it was home to many of the founding fathers including George Washington.

TOBACCO
The major cash crop of Virginia is tobacco. In 1609 John Rolfe arrived at the Jamestown Settlement in Virginia. He was the first man to successfully raise tobacco for commercial use in Jamestown. The tobacco raised in Virginia at that time, Nicotiana rustica, was not to the liking of the Europeans but Rolfe had brought some seed for Nicotiana tabacum with him from Bermuda. Although most of the settlers wouldn't touch the tobacco crop, Rolfe was able to make his fortune farming it for export at Varina Farms Plantation. John Rolfe is also known as the husband of Pocahontas, daughter of the chief of the Powhatan Confederacy.
CRABTREE FALLS
Crabtree Falls is located in the George Washington National Forest in Nelson County, Virginia. It is the tallest waterfall in the United States east of the Mississippi River. Crabtree Falls is a cascading waterfall with five major cascades, the tallest of which is about 400 feet (122 meters) and has several smaller cascades. The cascade with a 400 foot drop also gives Crabtree Falls the title of tallest vertical drop in a waterfall east of the Mississippi River.

The Pentagon is the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, located in Arlington, Virginia. The Pentagon building is the largest office building in the world. As one of the world's largest office buildings it has a floor space of 3,705,793 square feet. The Pentagon houses a daily working population of approximately 24,000 employees, both military and civilian. The Pentagon has nearly 68,000 miles of internal telephone lines.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is the world's largest bridge-tunnel complex. It is 23 miles (37km) long. For over 43 years the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel has captured worldwide attention as a modern engineering wonder and an important East Coast travel convenience. Crossing over and under open waters where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. The Bridge-Tunnel provides a direct link between South-eastern Virginia and the Delmarva Peninsula.

George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 in Virginia and died on December 14, 1799. He was the first president of the United States. He was known for his love of the land and farming and his dislike of war. He was a distinguished general and commander in chief of the colonial armies in the American Revolution. |
