Stone Mountain is a granite dome located in a suburb of Atlanta. At its summit the elevation is 1,683 feet (513 m) and 825 feet (251.5 m) above the surrounding plateau. Stone Mountain is one of the largest single masses of exposed granite in the world. The three men on the carving on the mountain are three Confederate heroes of the Civil War: Confederate President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee and Lt. General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.

In 1819 Savannah became the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The ship which measured 33 m (109 ft) made the crossing from Savannah, Georgia, to Liverpool, England, in 21 days. Records show that the ship was under steam power for only eight hours of the trip.
