The Logo Company Case Study
Stephen Rees
Introduction
Stephen Rees is a composer of media music (i.e. music for films, television, animation, trailers, computer games, adverts, etc.). His work involves creating music form the beginning to the end product (composing, recording, arranging and producing).
The target audience is film and television producers & directors, animators, computer games creative directors and producers, advertising creative’s and account managers etc. In general the target audience is highly creative, business orientated people.
The Design Process
The first thing to happen when we receive a new logo order is we get all of our design team together for a brain storming session to discuss ideas. This is where the designers will come up with lots of different ideas using the information provided on the order form. Once a team of designers for the project has been assigned, the designers begin creating their concepts. There are a minimum of 3 designers per project but the number can vary as some clients feel that having one designer is best and others believe “2 heads are better than one”. This is also the point when the designers may ask the client for additional information, which can be an image or even a sketch or doodle. This is the creative stage and leads to the creation of unique concepts.
Initial Concepts
By day three the designers will be sending out the initial concepts of the logo design. These designs are presented to another designer (the team leader of another business logo design project) for inspection and approval. The selected logo designs are then provided to the client for viewing and they can provide any revision instructions for each of the designs.
The initial concepts sent for this logo design project:
In the email we send to the client with the initial concepts we also explain about the colors used by our design teams as we do not use RGB (Red, Green, Blue) color palette but instead the professional Pantone color palette.
The RGB color scheme is used on TV's, computer monitors and home/office printers. The Pantone color scheme is the industry standard and all professional printers use this color scheme as it has greater variety of pre-mixed colors for a consistent corporate look.
We also direct the client to available Fonts from the online library at Adobe (we stock most of the Adobe fonts). Here the client can choose a font which appeals to them.
Client Feedback
Client Response
The client takes as long as they need to review the designs and think of any revisions they feel are necessary. When they are ready to move forward the client will provide us the instructions to carry out.
The client replied with the comment:
“Hi there,
Many thanks for all the excellent designs! It was a tough choice, but I would like to move forward with the following design please.
Design 4
I like the logo as is, but just to be sure there isn't a variation of it that might be even better, I wonder if you could try the following variations for me.
1) Variation 1 - Logo as is, but without the graphic in the top left hand corner (i.e. the guitar)
2) Variation 2 - Logo as is, but dark red and light red instead of dark green and light green
3) Variation 3 - Logo as is, but dark blue and light blue instead of dark green and light green
4) Variation 4 - Logo as is, but using the colour scheme from the logo for 'Champion Sports Management' on your website portfolio Page 6 (gold and 'grey' instead of dark green and light green (I'm not sure if the second colour is a grey or a dark blue on my monitor, but whatever it is it looks good!))
5) Variation 5 - Logo as is, but in the colour scheme used in one of the other logo designs you provided, namely: Design 3
6) Variation 6 - Logo as is, but including a 'film' motif like the one included in the following design.
Design 1
It would probably have to be a different colour (very light green or grey perhaps?), but I would like to see if that film idea can be incorporated into the overall logo design.
My feeling at this stage is that I will probably use the logo as is, but I just want to see the above variations to see if any of them might just feel more appropriate for my business.
Many thanks in advance and congratulations again on some really creative and interesting logo designs”
The client decided to continue with 3 of the designs. The client’s comments are passed on to the design team and they begin implementing the client’s instructions.
We aim to have the revised design/s back with the client in 3 business days.
1st Set of Revisions
This is the design which the design team prepared for the client to view and from here the client will decide if they would like more revisions or if they would like to have the design finalized:
The client responded to these designs with the following comments:
“Thanks for the revised logos. I would like to go ahead with the simple logo design without the guitar graphic, namely :- Design 4B
I would like to try a change the colour scheme of the logo though as follows:
1) 'Stephen' to be in black
2) ' Rees' to be a deep red. I don't have access to a Pantone Swatch, but I really like the colour used in the background on the website of one of my fellow composers, If you could perhaps show me a few variations of red near to the colour on Ian's website, that would be great! Feel free to recommend one in particular you think there is a burgundy / red that you feel would be
particularly effective. I would be happy to take your expert advice.
3) 'Music' to be in grey”
Once again the designs are passed back to our design team who implement the client’s request. The length of the design process depends entirely upon the number of revision rounds requested by the client. Each revision round can take up to 3 days for the designs to be sent back to the client.
