INTRODUCTION

“Texas, Our Texas! all hail the mighty state!
Texas, Our Texas! so wonderful and great!”

What the famous song does not tell you is that Texas is the largest coterminous state and home to the largest minerals, cattle, cotton and sheep industries in the US. It also possesses huge quantities of natural resources including oil, sulphur, salt, helium, asphalt, graphite, bromine, and natural gas. It is also the former host of NASA HQ.

THE LOGO COMPANY’S TOP 5 FACTS ABOUT TEXAS

COMMERCE

Texas is the second largest state by commerce and some of the world’s most famous brands, Exxon Mobil, Enron, El Paso, Reliant Energy, AT & T, Dynegy, Marathon Oil, Compaq, Conoco and Dell Computers all have their head offices there. These 10 companies generate over $650 billion, most of them operating out of Houston. These massive companies also provide some of the most commonly seen logos in day to day life. If Texas were a country it would rank as the eighth largest economy in the world with a gross state product of over $1000 billion. (larger than France and the UK).

HOUSTON PORT

The port of Houston in Texas is the sixth largest international commerce port in the world, moving 215 million tons of cargo in 2005. It was the first port to unload a container ship in 1956. Because of the port’s capacity to transport bulky material it was chosen as the headquarters of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

NASA

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Mission Control Centre was once located in Houston, Texas. The Johnson Space Centre is still located in Texas where visitors can see and take part in many exhibits and attractions. You may even get to see astronauts training for upcoming missions.

TOURISM

There are many other tourist attractions in Texas. Tourism adds $44 billion to the local economy. The majority of this is from Mexico. 7,000,000 Mexicans visit Texas each year thanks to its proximity and 800 direct flights a week. Most come for the 108 state parks including the famous Big Bend. The Johnson Space Centre and Alamo are also big tourism draw cards.

ALAMO

The Alamo in San Antonio was originally called Mision San Antonio de Valero and was originally built in its current position in 1719. It is the site where James Bowie, David Crockett and William Travis held out for 13 days against the Centralist army of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. This moment has come to symbolize courage and sacrifice for the cause of Liberty.

TEXANS OR TEXIANS?

Texans as the natives call themselves is not the true traditional name of someone raised or residing in Texas. The correct name may be Texian. On November 7, 1835 the Telegraph and Texas Register wrote this:

“The proper name for the people of Texas seems to be a matter of doubt. Some call themselves Texians, while others speak or write Texans, Texonians, Texasians or even Texicans. We believe that, both by the Mexican and American residents, the name commonly used is Texians”
